Mr. Gerry Millett & Mr. Gary Phillips

It’s often not until later in life that one reflects back and realizes the impact certain people had on who they became.

I was blessed with many very good teachers at NWSS, some stern, some engaging, some trusting, all mentors in various ways. Mr. Rafter, Mr. Swalwell, Mr. Ireland, Mr. Gair, Mr. Nyhaug all come to mind.

But there were two whom I have the most personal respect for - Mr. Gerry Millett, and Mr. Gary Phillips.

Gerry Millett was my Grade 11 & 12 Physics teacher. His teaching style combined with an awesome sense of humour had me fully engaged each class. Who can forget his “stamp” of disapproval (attached). My interest in Sciences were without question due to Mr. Millett. It led me to a successful career and an early retirement. “Cheers” and “Thank you” Gerry, from your ‘pusillanimous friend’ (also attached).

Gary Phillips was my Math Teacher, Basketball Coach, and Student Council Sponsor. Needless to say, I saw a lot of him during my years at NWSS. Besides being a great teacher and mentor, I wondered how he managed to contribute so much of his time to his students whilst still attending to his family (wife and young daughter). I remember Mr. Phillips taking work folders and a child’s car seat out of the back seat of his 2-door Barracuda in order to make room for several of his basketball players and drive us to an Away game. “Thank you” Garry. You left a lifetime impression on me that perseverance and hard work definitely pay off.

Thanks again to all of the teachers and staff at NWSS. Your efforts are appreciated.
