My name is John Upton-Noot and I was a student at NWSS in the late 1960’s.
I have a few items for consideration for inclusion in the NWSS farewell documentary:
First item is the NWSS school crest
I designed this crest in 1967 when I was attending NWSS in grade 11. When the 2 previous schools (Vincent Massey and Lester Person) were amalgamated back in the late 60s the school held a contest to design a new school crest/logo and my submission was selected. I’m pleased that the crest I designed has “stood the test of time” and is still proudly being displayed.
Second Item:
I have an old copy of the school news letter “The Mike” dated March 23, 1967. This issue is notable as it was Canada’s 100 Centennial and the year NWSS chose the name “HYACKS” for the school teams and for the introduction of the school crest. (as above)
Third Item:
The scorekeepers hut/structure that is still located at the top of spectator stands adjacent the track and field (6th Street side) was originally built by shop students of which I was one. Back in those days shop class (woodworking etc) actually built a small house each year with the shop students learning basic house construction skills. The house was then auctioned off and the funds being applied to the following years build. The year we were building the house the class was asked by the school to build a small structure in the stands for the scorekeepers. (note: I’m not 100% certain the current structure is 100% the original structure but it certainly looks like it)
Regards,
John Upton-Noot
