Hi, NWSS Farewell Committee!
I was a student at NWSS from 1963-1968. When I began my time at the school there were two separate schools - Vincent Massey and Lester B. Pearson. When the two schools were joined together with a huge concourse it was a great day for us. Mainly because we were all going to get a locker. The massive enclosed hallway across the second floor was filled from end to end with lockers. Quite a sight to behold.
My main role during my years at NWSS was in the service area. I have more pins for service than anything else. That proved to serve me well in my career as a teacher. One of my favourite service roles was coordinating the doughnut sales. I was responsible for sending delicious glazed doughnuts across the two schools. The trays of doughnuts were sent to stations around the buildings in time for our break between classes. The rush to buy doughnuts, eat doughnuts and still get to class on time was a challenging feat. Counting all the coins was the next major task. The doughnuts cost 5 to 10 cents each so a ton of coins had to be counted - accurately!!
My NWSS experience was awesome and was filled with friends, clubs, some sports, and learning mostly about myself with a little bit of academics thrown in. Those courses allowed me to enter a university and enjoy a career teaching young children. I will miss driving by my old alma mater building but I do wish all staff and students a great start in a new NWSS!!
